The Best Grow Lights Grow the Best Plants

The benefits of gardening under grow light systems are hard to ignore. I can't imagine a better way to grow a healthy crop of green seedlings. If indoor gardening is one of your favorite hobbies, discount grow lights will guarantee your orchids, African violets, and hibiscus will continue to bloom year-round. Maybe you prefer growing wintertime plants such as vine-ripened tomatoes, herbs or salad greens. 400 watt grow lights can accomplish the same results.

A general rule I like to follow for my garden's required indoor plant lighting is that 1000W adequately provides enough lighting for my garden area. If you are looking to make your plant grow lights system more efficient, use a reflector combined with a light mover. Don't forget that many types of hydroponic hps grow light systems use a ballast to ignite the bulb.

As an indoor gardening aficionado, you are well are aware that different plants require different lighting requirements. Armed with this knowledge is a great starting point for deciding how to set up your garden's discount grow lights. The most important thing to consider is how much light coverage you would like your plants to receive. Inadequate indoor plant lighting produces small, weak plants, unable to completely fruit. You won't benefit from cutting corners to save money when it comes to grow light systems. You'll just end up wasting a lot of time and money in the end. The most popular sizes of discount grow lights range from 100W, 250W, 400W, 600W, to 1000W. the general rule I like to follow is to make sure each light covers a certain square area based on its wattage output. This square area is the place where your light will produce the most light and an excellent guide to plan out the design of the garden. Try using some reflectors to shift some of light to other areas of the garden too if possible. There are three main types of discount grow lights. These are incandescent, fluorescent, and high-intensity discharge. Incandescent lights are generally the least choice you would want to use. Their inefficiency and limited light spectrum doesn't provided the same intensity and value compared to an hps grow light.

A discount grow light such as a 400 watt grow light is much more efficient, producing more light, but also more heat. HID lights are another option but require additional maintenance and expense of ballast. HID grow lights are slow to warm up to full strength. It can take close to 100 hours of burning before the light intensity and color stabilizes.

By learning how your plants can benefit from a 400W grow light and all of the different bulbs and fixtures available, you can choose the best indoor lighting system suited to your home and the kinds of plants you are growing.

How To Have Attractive Plants On Your Verandah All Year Round

There is nothing better or more joyful than seeing gorgeously full hanging baskets creating a splash of colour during the summer months. They can also add a nice finishing touch to any verandah and make it even more welcoming and enjoyable.

But while there is no doubt we will use our outdoor spaces more during the summer, it’s still nice to see some colour during the winter too. We may not go outside quite as often but we can still see our garden from indoors, and this means it’s nice to be able to see a riot of colour throughout the winter too.

And it’s not as hard to make this a reality as you might think. The only thing stopping you from having a gorgeous looking verandah or patio area all year round is knowledge – knowledge of what grows at what time of the year, and how to grow it.

Some people are unaware that it is perfectly possible to have hanging baskets all year round, but there is no reason why you can’t; you just need to know which plants will be coming to fruition just as your summer ones finally reach the end of their life.

The trick to having a verandah or outdoor space that is always rife with colour is to learn which plants to use at which time, and to be ready with replacements when you dig out the ones that need removing. Alternatively you could buy ready made hanging baskets so that all you need to do is take down your summer ones and put the winter ones up! It feels a little like cheating and it isn’t as much fun, but it could provide a good answer if you are a beginner and you don’t have the confidence to choose individual plants and plant them from scratch.

The best bet is to choose small plants that are ready to plant straight out when they are in season. If you lack knowledge in this area ask the advice of an assistant at your local garden centre. They will know which plants should go in the shady area at the rear of your verandah nearest your house, and which ones can tolerate the sun at the edge of the verandah, where it meets the garden.

You should also consider having a variety of items such as hanging baskets and pots in the area. If you are keen on gardening then you can include troughs or beds that are built into the floor of your design; these could be raised to allow for easier planting, and to enable you to plant trailing plants that will grow over the edges and down to the floor.

Finally why not consider buying small evergreen trees in pots that you can place at the rear door of your house if it opens directly onto your verandah, for a grander and more elegant feel? These take the minimum of work and they will look wonderful all year round.

Ideas and Online Deals For a Garden That Blooms

My wife, three kids and myself have just moved into a new home: a four-bedroom, two-storey house located in the outskirts of the city. It’s a lovely place, simply but practically furnished, and I am in charge of developing an outdoor space at the family backyard to sort of put the finishing touches on this new domestic life. Planning a garden can be a pain, so I am working on a few ideas and considering a good number of online deals to make this project less stressful and more affordable.

Using my architectural skills, I created a design of something that would serve as a place for play and barbecue. Play because my kids are easily bored indoors – video games don’t cut it for them, which is good – and because it’s healthy to be able to have outdoor fun, be it in a swimming pool, on a mini-playground on the grass, or a makeshift backyard camp with tent. Barbecue because – well, because it would be nice to meet our neighbors, introduce ourselves, and start new friendships in a relaxed, casual, albeit smoky and slight alcoholic atmosphere. (Yes, I am bringing beers, folks!)

Thus I am assessing the condition of lights and soils and shade and trees and plants; I am taking pictures, rendering new designs, reading magazines, listening to suggestions, and consulting relatives and colleagues. I am thinking of ways on how to provide for shade: a sun-resistant parasol? A sail shade? I am also talking to my kids about what they want: Do they want a place where they can nurse pets? Would they like a playhouse complete with a sandbox and swing set?

I have also looked up the Smith & Hawken website to find out which garden structures would be appropriate for my needs. They have plenty of affordable online deals – be it for garden structures (I love their trellises and English-style arches), window boxes, plant stands, terrariums, plaques, stepping stones, fountains, and other such materials for landscaping a backyard paradise. What’s nice about most of the stuff that they have on sale is that these are being offered to be shipped for free.

Of course, while designing and building, I am keeping in mind outdoor safety. It’s a must in households with children: such as mine. That’s why I am looking to build a small storage area – by refurbishing an unused gazebo located in an area near the garden – so that my power tools and equipment are out of my playful children’s reach. Oh, I’ve seen enough TV reality shows and documentaries to exercise precaution in the backyard.

My wife, meanwhile, is the one in charge of all things flora and fauna. She loves the job; I believe that she herself has been looking for online deals for sweet-smelling, double-flowering, butterfly-attracting stocks. Like lilacs, Susans, daylilies and campanulas. She is also researching on elegant but affordable planters, pots, urns, cast-iron trivets and caddies. I am very confident that with her work (and her wisely calculated budget), our garden will bloom – as does our love, marriage, and family life.

The Plant You Can Grow To Organically Repel Mosquitoes

I don’t know anyone on this planet that enjoys the company of mosquitoes. They are definitely one of the most revolting vermin this world has to offer; existing only to suck blood from healthy bodied people and animals and spreading vile diseases such as Malaria and the West Nile Virus. As summer heat warms dirty, standing water patches in bogs, swamps, and yes, backyards, mosquitoes grow and take hold in new ecosystems, driven by nature’s instilled desire to breed, bite, and “bug” other inhabitants. New ways of controlling burgeoning mosquito populations are continuously researched, and new chemical mixtures and sprays rush to supermarket shelves, hoping to do the deed. A study has shown that mosquitoes are repelled naturally by a plant that is easily grown and cared for, and that will please your neighborhoods feline population as well: catnip.

Researchers in Iowa, undoubtedly spurred on by the rise of cases of the West Nile Virus in the United States, researched and tested several plant varieties, hoping to find a safer alternative to the active ingredient in many commercial mosquito repellents, DEET. DEET has been shown to cause brain-cell death and behavior changes in laboratory animals, and poses these risks and others when used to protect young children from mosquitoes. While DEET is no longer being manufactured, it still exists in small quantities in insect repellant sprays that are still sold. A head research scientist involved in studies at the University of Iowa found through extensive testing that the essential oil found in catnip, nepetalactone, is nearly ten times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than the toxic chemical DEET. This study also found that catnip oil repelled cockroaches as well, yet another of our world’s least appealing insects. Though testing has surely shown that mosquitoes and roaches are repelled by catnip, researchers aren’t sure why, but assume it must cause some sort of irritation to the vermin, if only that they don’t enjoy its smell.

The same oil that causes roaches and mosquitoes to flee, nepetalactone, causes at least two thirds of the feline population to flip their lid. Catnip is extremely easy to grow, both indoors and outdoors, whether from a seed or a start. Catnip does require adequate, but not constant, sun, and only minimal waterings are needed. Keep your hose on its hose reel (especially if growing inside!) and simply use your watering can to water the crop about once a week. You’ll be entertaining your cats and bidding adieu to pesky mosquitoes and roaches in no time!

Fall Garden Checklist

Before you begin cleaning out your garden in the fall, a simple way to make sure you haven’t missed doing anything is to make yourself a checklist. As you are sitting and enjoying the last days of the summer months and your garden while also waiting for your fall garden to blossom, start noticing little thing that you will need to do and make a list of them. Fall Garden Clean - Up

It’s almost time to begin your fall garden clean-up. Before long that spectacular summer garden will be gone and the time will be here for that fall garden clean - up. With the cool brisk days of autumn close, cleaning the garden for next years planting will be easier when you have had that fall head start. Begin by removing your dead or dying flowers a little at a time. By doing this slowly it will help to keep you garden neat, tidy, and having a presentable appearance before the frost sets in. Instead of letting your garden become overgrown and ugly, as the season starts to change, keep your leaves raked and your trees and shrubs pruned back.

Cleaning away old plants and plant matter will also help to prevent organisms such as fungi, bacteria, viruses and insect eggs from wintering in during the winter months spoiling your soil for next years spring garden. If some of your plants became infected over the summer months, remember you will need to remove the old mulch as well; it too may be infected with disease spores and insect eggs. if you have plants that did not do as well as you expected, or multiplied to more than you want, now is a good time to either discard them or thin them out and replant them somewhere else in the garden.

If you have a fall garden be it flowers or vegetables, after the last harvest or blossom, pull up the entire plant and discard (this is an excellent way to harvest seeds for next year). Make sure you remove any weeds at this time also; they too drop seeds and will sprout up at first spring.

Once your garden is all cleaned out, now is a good time to feed your soil, by adding fertilizer, compost, mulch and compost manure and some organic topsoil, then tilling it under and lastly covering it with pine straw or pine bark on top preparing it for next spring. Now that you have cleaned your garden for the winter, it can take a rest and so can you, because before you know it, it will be spring and time to start all over.

White Bougainvillea Flowers

Bougainvillea, an outstandingly attractive plant seen in large quantity in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, got its forename from Louis Antoine de Bougainvillea, a respectable person in the French Navy that came across these plants in Brazil in 1768 and explained their prettiness to his colleagues in Europe when he got back home.

Bougainvilleas are fast growing plants that generate white flowers perennial in sunny warm weathers and Vallarta completely meets their necessities by giving just about 320 sunny days every year with a standard yearly temperature of 78°F. Being deciduous, they do very well devoid of much watering all through the seven months of dehydrated period in Vallarta from November till May, when there is in effect no rain. As sharp vines, they seem happily growing up; straight or even lynching down and can stretch out for approximately 40 feet.

It's almost not possible to go anyplace in Vallarta without considering bougainvilleas growing abundantly. They are all over the place along the pavement, can be marked on the hillsides of Sierra Madre, act as preserved plants or give out as an ornamental bushes around each casita as well as cabin. You can find them all over the golf tracks, and also around all public places. Bougainvilleas can be seen lynching above walls, from verandas, and from windowsills in all Vallarta district. Since they are so opaque with shrubbery and spiny thorns, they are perfect and regularly used as colorful circumvents along the footpaths and flanked by plenty.

Now the question arises that if all these flowers are in white color, then how do these plants look very beautiful and colorful? The reply for this is it’s not the flowers, which draws the attention; instead it’s their appearance. Each and every bougainvillea has tiny white trumpet form of flowers in bunches of three, encircled by three or six intensely colored bracts. These bracts are in fact customized as well as specialized leaves, usually somewhat smaller than the green shrubbery leaves and their principles are to draw the attention of the pollinators.

As of bougainvilleas, these bracts can be red, magenta, lavender, cherry, orange, golden, white, or else a mixture of colors. Poinsettia is one more example of an attractive plant, where the concentrated red color that is well known at the time of Christmas is indeed the Poinsettia bract and not a flower. In Vallarta there are various excursions that are taken on a daily base by thousands of cruise boat travelers and other guests. The Basics of Feeding Wild Baby Birds

Have you found yourself in the position of baby bird caregiver?

In feeding wild baby birds, you have a few different options available. To aid you in feeding these birds in need, you can use a variety of tools to deliver the food. Tools to consider that are easily available include: tweezers, syringes, eyedroppers, small paint brushes, popsicle sticks, blunt toothpicks, your fingers and pipettes.Depending on what food or formula you're giving, pick the most suitable tool or a combination. The thickness of the food formula is usually dependant on the age of the bird so if you're feeding a group use a combination of tools that are most effective.

Young birds will readily reach out for food until they are full. Avoid over-feeding baby birds but remember they need frequent small feedings. If they are slow to take food, they may be full or too dehydrated to eat. Also if a baby bird doesn't take food, it may be sick, nervous, or unaware that your gesture is a feeding attempt. In these cases, try taping the side of the nest or whistle lightly so as to mimic a parent birds arrival home.

Baby birds in the wild are naturally fed throughout the day. You'll want to do the same as the bird's caregiver. Generally hatchings should be fed every 20 minutes. Young birds who are not babies can be fed every two hours. Try to give baby birds the same food they would naturally eat in the wild. You may need to research what that particular bird species normally eats. You may also call a local animal center to inquire about what food is appropriate or if a formula recipe is suitable for your particular bird. When feeding ensure that any food is cleaned up and not left to dry on the bird's feathers as this can cause skin problems or feather to fall off.

The goal of you as the caregiver of a baby bird, is to provide temporary care until the bird is well enough to survive in it's natural environment on it's own. Avoid interacting with bird other than at feeding and cleaning times. Also ensure that the bird is kept away from domestic animals including pet birds.

I hope this helps you rehabilitate and feed the wild baby birds you find in need.

Greenhouse Accessories for Savvy Gardeners

If you are a dedicated gardener, you know about the importance of having your own little greenhouse. Professional growers have long since learned to employ the advantages of these hothouses, and have realized profits for decades simply because they were often times able to get a head start on growing seasons, or coax hard to find flowers and plants out of the protective shells of their seeds. Yet no matter whose hothouse you visit, you will find that there are several greenhouse accessories that appear to be a must for savvy gardeners.

Greenhouse accessories are almost always practical in nature, although sometimes they may be considered more ornamental and for aesthetics. While savvy gardeners do not mind having beautifully adorned greenhouses, they are more concerned with the functional aspects.

Once accessory you should always have on hand are replacement parts. Sure, your greenhouse is in good repair, and you do not foresee having to replace anything. But if it is Saturday afternoon and you suddenly notice that your greenhouse has a missing window pane, or a loose door, you do not want to drive all over creation in the hopes that somebody is stocking the very product that you need right now! For this reason it is a good idea to have spare panes, as well as nuts and bolts that repair loose or lost items.

Other greenhouse accessories include plant stands, insulation, plant hooks, watering systems, and also ventilation systems. Even if you do not foresee needing one of these things right this minute, it never hurts to be prepared for when you do need it. After all, you do not want to loose an entire crop simply because you were not able to quickly adjust the temperature in your greenhouse, do you?
